Ronald (Ron) Sullivan, a man of honour, humility, and unwavering love, peacefully departed this life on December 26th, 2024 at St. Joseph’s Hospice, with his beloved wife of 71 years, Dot, by his side.

Born on September 15, 1935, in Toronto to Margaret and Herb Sullivan, Ron’s early years were spent in the city before his family relocated to Keswick, ON, when he was 11. It was there that he met the love of his life, Dot (Dorothy) Naylor. Their connection was immediate and enduring. They married on July 18, 1953, when Ron was 17 and Dot was 19. Ron’s youthful determination led him to obtain a special letter of permission from his parents to wed the woman he knew would forever be his partner.

Ron’s professional journey began at the age of 17 at Scottish Union National Insurance Company in Toronto, where he thrived as a Claims Adjuster for a decade. Recognized for his dedication and expertise, he joined the esteemed law firm of Thomson Rogers as a Law Clerk, serving diligently until 1973. That same year, Ron embraced a new adventure, moving his family to Thunder Bay to join the law firm Petrone Hatherly and Mitchell. In 1978, he left to help begin the law firm of Macgillivray-Poirier, where he worked passionately until his retirement at age 65. Even after retiring, Ron continued to lend his expertise to the firm until 2021, showcasing an unmatched work ethic and commitment.

As an only child, Ron cherished family deeply. He embraced Dot’s extended family as his own, forging bonds that brought him immense joy. Family was his cornerstone, and he devoted his life to nurturing his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether offering sage advice, sharing quiet moments, or cheering on their pursuits, Ron’s love and wisdom left an indelible mark. His home was a haven, welcoming all with open arms and boundless affection.

Ron’s zest for life extended beyond his family and work. He was a passionate golfer and long-time member of the Thunder Bay Country Club and later joining the Whitewater Golf Club in 2004. His love for skiing knew no bounds, and he frequently braved even the coldest days to carve fresh trails at Mount Baldy and Loch Lomond, skiing with enthusiasm well into his 80s.

Ron delighted in swimming, dancing, and music and was an accomplished hockey player. An avid reader, he devoured novels in just a few days, always eager for the next adventure. Camping was another cherished pastime, and Ron found joy in introducing younger generations to the wonders of nature, a tradition his family continues to uphold. Travel brought him and Dot together with friends across the globe, creating cherished memories that enriched their lives.

Ron leaves behind his devoted wife of 71 years, Dot (Dorothy) Sullivan, his children Mark (Paula) Sullivan, Lee (Randy) Kine, and Geoff (Marla) Sullivan, as well as his treasured grandchildren Kristiina, Eric, Carly, Kaity, Cassi, Paige, and Tyler, and eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who will forever hold him close in their hearts. Predeceasing Ron are his parents, Margaret and Herb Sullivan, and his identical twin sons born sleeping, Peter and Paul Sullivan.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate and professional staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice for their unwavering care, as well as Dr. Ward, Dr. Migay, and Dr. Simpson for their steadfast support and guidance.

A celebration of Ron’s remarkable life will take place on Tuesday, January 7, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception at Sargent and Sons Funeral Chapel, 21 North Court Street, Thunder Bay. Those unable to attend the services in person can join the celebration online on the Sargent & Son Facebook page.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice in Ron’s memory. His legacy of love, integrity, and generosity will live on in all who knew him. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com.
