Thunder Bay has officially joined the ranks of Ontario's major mining centres.

The Central Canada Resource Expo (CEN-CAN Expo) at the Fort William Gardens on Sept. 11 & 12 underscores this status, putting Thunder Bay at the forefront of the mining industry.

As Glenn Dredhart, President of Canadian Trade-Ex, highlights, “the city is now a pivotal player in this sector”.

Canadian Trade-Ex, renowned for organizing some of Canada’s largest mining events over the past 30 years, has firmly placed Thunder Bay on the trade show circuit. The CEN-CAN Expo, held annually in Thunder Bay, serves as a vital platform for networking, knowledge exchange, and showcasing the latest advancements in the mining sector.

The CEN-CAN Expo is instrumental in fostering collaboration among industry stakeholders. The three-day event gathers mining companies, suppliers, service providers, government representatives, and Indigenous communities. It features a comprehensive exhibition of cutting-edge equipment, technologies, and services. Additionally, the expo offers conferences, workshops, and presentations on topics such as exploration, development, Indigenous partnerships, environmental sustainability, and community engagement.

The expo's contributions to Northwestern Ontario’s economy are significant. The event drives economic growth through increased tourism, job creation, direct spending, investment attraction, business development, infrastructure development, and knowledge transfer and innovation.

The event hosts one of Canada’s largest mining career fairs with over 80 companies accepting resumes onsite. Anyone with a resume in hand will be given a free pass for the event. Human resource staff will be on hand to accept those resumes.

There is something for everyone. You can come down and cheer your miners on as they compete in the Northern Jackleg Drilling Competitions which is hosted by Manroc Development and sponsored by Impala Canada and Mining Life & Exploration news.

As the world transitions to sustainable energy, Canada’s critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite, are essential for the production of electric vehicle (EV) batteries and other green technologies. Northern Ontario’s vast reserves of these minerals position Canada uniquely in the global market.

The Canadian and Ontario governments are investing significantly in the mining sector, enhancing infrastructure, extraction technologies, and fostering partnerships with global EV manufacturers. These efforts aim to secure a stable and sustainable supply chain, cementing Canada’s role in the global EV market.

The integration of critical minerals into the EV industry is generating high-quality jobs, driving technological innovation, and stimulating economic growth in mining communities across Canada.

Canada’s critical minerals are indispensable to the future of the EV industry. By leveraging our natural resources and adhering to sustainable practices, Canada is poised to lead the global shift towards clean energy. Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario are central to this transformation, driving forward a greener, more sustainable world.

The Northwestern Ontario Prospectors Association will be onsite under the big tent with a Core Shack Display where they will be promoting future producers from within Northwestern Ontario. Come talk to the prospectors, see the rocks and maps and view the core samples.
