It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jonathon “Jon” Micheal Bouchard, affectionately known as JB, age 45, a proud member of Long Lake #58 First Nation, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Geraldton District Hospital on Saturday, November 9, 2024.

Jon was born on October 30, 1979, in Geraldton to Deborah Bouchard and Dennis Mugaby. In his youth, Jon shared countless cherished moments with his grandparents, Nina and George Muckaday, at their cabin on the family trapline. It was there he developed a deep love for the outdoors, learning to hunt, check traps, and fish. He often fondly remembered his Nana Nina “cooking up a storm” in the kitchen, whether at the cabin or at home. Jon’s love for carpentry began in these early years as he watched his Papa George, Dad, and uncles work on various projects. Over time, Jon became an integral part of these endeavors, honing his skills and passion for carpentry that would stay with him throughout his life.

Jon would often recall his days when he lived in Sudbury, Ontario. Where he met the mother and love of his life June Young. It was here where he would recall fond memories of when his oldest kids were younger and would later say “that was the happiest time in his life”.

Jon had a natural gift for cooking, often experimenting with recipes or putting his own twist on dishes—something he learned from his Nana Nina and carried with him always.

Among all Jon’s hobbies and interests, nothing inspired him more than the time he got to spend with his kids Jonothan Jr., Alyssa, and Matthew. This was where Jon shined and the love and admiration he showed his kids was unlike anything else. He was also a proud grandfather, often talking about his granddaughter, Scarlett Bouchard, whom he had yet to meet but held in his heart. He found hope for the future in the belief that one day they would be together.

As a teenager Jon demonstrated remarkable bravery when he and his friend Lance Deperry saved the lives of several children in Pic River First Nation, Ontario. The children had been caught in a powerful current, and Lance and Jon’s quick thinking and courage in rescuing them prevented what could have been a tragic loss.

Jon shared an undeniable bond with his brother Dennis Jr., also known as JR. They were incredibly close, sharing numerous memories together as they grew up. Whether sitting around the table telling stories or exchanging playful banter, Jon and JR’s relationship was built on love, laughter, and a deep connection that will never be forgotten.

Jon’s work ethic was something he took great pride in, and it was a quality that carried through in all aspects of his life. Whether providing for his family, or extending his generosity and love to friends, family, or even a random stranger, Jon's dedication to hard work and his unwavering care for others were evident in everything he did. His kindness and willingness to lend a hand will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Jon is lovingly remembered by his children, Jonothan Jr. Bouchard, Alyssa Bouchard, and Matthew Muckaday; his beloved granddaughter, Scarlett Bouchard; his mother, Debbie Bouchard; his father, Dennis Mugaby; and his stepmother, Roseline Mugaby. He will also be dearly missed by his siblings, Dennis Jr. Muckaday (JR), Nakita Duguay Bouchard, Sherry Zatti (Dan), Seneca Mendowegan, Donna Mendowegan, and Brittney Mendowegan (Troy); his grandmother, Daisy Bouchard; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Jon was predeceased by his grandfather, Raphal Bouchard; his grandparents, Nina and George Muckaday; his aunt, Arlene Bouchard; uncles, Barry Bouchard and George Sr. Muckaday;  his Cousin Greg Muckaday; his brother, Ronald Duguay Jr.; and the mother of his children, June Young, whom Jon often referred to as the love of his life.

Funeral Services will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Family and friends are invited to gather at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Longlac for a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m., celebrated by Father Hugo Tremblay. Interment will follow at Longlac Cemetery.

A two-day wake will be held in the home of Jonathon’s father, Dennis Mugaby, located at 138 Poplar Crescent, in Ginoogaming First Nation, beginning at 4:00 p.m on Thursday, November 14, 2024, and continuing until Saturday morning.

At the beginning of the wake from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, 2024 the wake will be only open to family and later from 6:00 p.m. – Saturday morning the wake will be open to family and friends.

Jon will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and community.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the WESTFORT CHAPEL, 420 West Gore Street at James, Thunder Bay.
