With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of William (Bill) Richard Costello, on January 21, 2025, in Atikokan, Ontario. Bill was a great family man, doing everything he could for his wife and children and will always be remembered for his love of family and the outdoors.
Bill was born to Rita and William Costello on November 8, 1942, in Fort Frances, Ontario. Bill's father died when he was 7 which made him learn independence at a young age. He was not afraid to tackle anything and taught himself many things. To help after his fathers passing, Bill worked his first job at George Armstrongs' in Fort Frances. Growing up he did many things, sailed on big ships with Cadets, worked construction in British Columbia, and worked the rail lines.
In 1965, Bill proposed to the love of his life, Ruby, in Winnipeg. Their deep bond led to a marriage filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Together, they raised three children—Richard, Ruby Ann and Billie Jane—instilling in them the values of love, hard work, and resilience. After marrying Ruby, Bill returned east to work at Steep Rock Iron Mines in Atikokan and later at Calmang Steel, where he was respected for his dedication and integrity until his retirement. It was his role as a husband, father, and grandfather that defined him most. Bill adored his grandchildren—Richard, Cierra, and Annie—and treasured every family gathering, no matter how big or small. Many good times were spent as a family fishing on serene lakes, hunting in the wilderness, or camping under stars. Many summers were spent camping at Finlayson Lake as well all the time spent at the cabin he built for the family. He found peace and joy in nature. Bill and Ruby also shared a love for travel and adventure, often accompanied by their beloved pets. While they explored new destinations, for Bill, the best place was always where his family was.
Bill is survived by his loving children Richard (Niki), Ruby Ann, and Billie (Cary), grandchildren Richard, Cierra (Josh), Annie and Bianca and their beloved furbaby Harry Whiskers. His extended family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
Bill is predeceased by his beloved wife Ruby, whose passing in 2024 left an indelible mark on him, his parents Rita and William Costello and his sister Jaunita.
As we bid farewell to Bill, we celebrate a life well-lived, taking comfort in knowing he is free once more, reunited with beloved Ruby who he missed greatly. As per Bill’s wishes, a private family memorial will be held.
