It is with profound sadness that the family of Bonita “Bonnie” Brooks Markevich announce her passing on Sunday, December 17, 2023.

Bonnie had many talents, musically, she played piano and cello as part of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. She excelled at numerous crafts, often making porcelain dolls, or fabricating needlepoint, petit point, cross stitch, and knitting projects. Many of these were given as gifts to family and friends and will be forever treasured.

Having a love of all kinds of arts, Bonnie enjoyed beautiful paintings and antique furniture. She took great pleasure in sitting outside, enjoying her windchimes and flowers.

After her retirement from Bell Canada, she spent much of her time committed to volunteering at Hospice Northwest. She gave much love and understanding to patients and families. Committed to extending her learning skills, she became certified in Reiki and healing touch. She was also a member of Slovak Legion 129.

A little black Cocker Spaniel named Dicey stole her heart and was a constant companion for many years. Together, they lived on the corner of Erindale Street until poor health led to a new home at Pioneer Ridge. Here, she made new friends like her pal Bonnie—the two Bonnies liked to raise cane and look for trouble together.

She loved to tease staff right (Kris) and offer an array of treats for anyone who stopped by. She especially loved when Casey Jones and Spirit visited, there were always treats for them.

Bonnie is survived by her sister, Christine Walters; brother, Michael Markevich; and very loved niece, Jennifer (Parm) Owens; and nephew, Michael - and Krista - Owens. Although she was not biologically their mother, she loved and treated Jennifer and Michael as her own all their lives.

Predeceased by her parents, Tynne and Michael Markevich.

The family greatly appreciated the excellent care from the staff of the fourth floor at Pioneer Ridge. From the volunteer who painted her nails, to Paul and all the RNs, RPNs and PSWs. We would like to say thank you to all staff and residents of Pioneer Ridge and many thanks for all of the cards, phone calls, food, and donations.
Bonnie will be missed greatly, but she left an endearing mark with each and every one of us. As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Should friends so desire, donations in Bonnie’s memory can be made to Hospice Northwest.

So, bye-bye Bon Bon, until we meet again.

We love you.
