It is with the saddest of hearts that the family of Gayle Scherban (nee Kylander) announce that our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandma and friend, lost her battle with cancer on August 25, 2024. Surrounded by love and her family, she passed peacefully and has started her journey home. A beautiful soul who touched so many lives in this world, a beacon of light and love, Gayle fought for many years with a grace that we can only hope to achieve.

Gayle was born September 19, 1951, in Port Arthur, Ontario. She was the eldest of 3 children. At the age of 16, she met the love of her life, Michael Scherban. The two of them shared 57 wonderful years together and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family this past June 28th. She completed her education at Lakehead University and became a well respected teacher with the Thunder Bay District Catholic School Board, a career she was proud of and where she created many friendships that have lasted a lifetime. Her dedication to her students and passion for education will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched. Gayle and Mike built a beautiful family together with their two sons, and she took great pride in raising their boys. They spent their time creating lasting memories of life at the lake on East Floral and Ishkibibble beaches. Her later years were spent doting on her 4 grandchildren. Family was at the centre of everything for Gayle.

Her passing is felt by many. She is survived by her loving husband Michael Scherban, sons Joel Scherban (Katie), and Matthew Scherban (Riley), grandchildren Elliott, Harrison, Olivia and Charles Scherban, sister Judy Bresele (Tim), sister-in-law Cheryl Kylander, nieces and nephews Riely Surcon (Scott), Jodi Kylander, Jenna Holm (Andrew), Jason Bresele (Hannah), Lauren Bresele (Tannor), sister-in-law Kathy Scherban, niece Victoria Scherban and nephew Chris Scherban. She also leaves behind many friends who have been like family to Gayle.

She was predeceased by her parents Ruth and Ky (Aimo) Kylander and brother Brad Kylander as well as her mother-in-law and father-in-law Dorothy and Victor Scherban and brother-in-law Danny Scherban.

Those fortunate enough to have been blessed by her presence share memories that will carry them for a lifetime. Gayle leaves behind a void that cannot be filled, but the foundation laid by her, built on love and family, will be evident for generations to come.

Her family would like to thank those who have cared for Gayle, particularly those in this challenging time: Dr. Kennedy, Dr. Del Paggio, Dr. Sellick, and the staff at Thunder Bay Regional Cancer Centre, and St Joseph’s Hospice, including Ryan, Kelsey, and Tiff.

A private celebration of life will be held in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Cancer Centre or a charity of your choice is appreciated.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
