In her 95th year of blessing us with her love, Mary Danco, of Atikokan passed away peacefully on July 11, 2023 with family by her side. She was a wonderful woman with the patience of an angel and a heart big enough to comfort anyone who experienced the joy of knowing her. She selflessly devoted her life to her husband of 58 years, Joe, and their 11 children.
Mary was born on August 23, 1928 in Atikokan where she spent most of her life. She worked in Toronto at Whitman’s Chocolate Factory and in the kitchen at Steep Rock Iron Mine. Mary was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, St. Peter and Paul’s Ukrainian Church, and the CWL for over 50 years. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tending to the garden—yes, she somehow managed to find the time.
Mary was the epitome of a loving wife and mother. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. Mary’s family will always remember how she worked tirelessly to make every holiday memorable and magical.
Her warmth exuded through her immense strength, patience, and devotion to family and faith. Her beautiful smile, infectious laughter, gentle kindness, and everlasting love will forever be in our hearts.
Mary is survived by her children Bob (Darlene), Dan (Bernadette), Rick (Sandra, at peace), Terry (Joanne), Mary (Keith), Cyndy (Doug), Debra (Peter), Lori (Magdi), Susie (Michel); and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mary is predeceased by husband Joe; sons Joey (Jeannie) and Larry; and grandsons Derek and Andrew.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to all the friends, neighbours, and staff at Atikokan Long-term Care who cared for our beloved Mom.
A funeral service will be held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Atikokan on August 18, 2023 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Atikokan General Hospital or charity of choice.
