A cherished father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2024, at the age of 63 in his hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario, after his 6th courageous battle with cancer. Born on September 17, 1961, in the same community, Syd’s infectious laughter and generous spirit were a beacon of joy to all who knew him.

Syd was known for his sharp wit, loving nature, and generous spirit. He attended Selkirk High School and went on to complete a mechanic apprenticeship at the local Esso station, which paved the way for his career. For 30 years, he dedicated his expertise to Dominion Motors as a mechanic, where his dependable work and friendly banter were greatly appreciated by colleagues and customers alike. Syd's passion for automobiles did not fade upon retirement; he continued to share his knowledge and jovial spirit at Fat Guys Auto Parts.

A true family man, Syd’s proudest achievement was his three sons - Spencer, Dylan, and Cameron Godfrey - who inherited his humor and kind-heartedness. His siblings, Don Godfrey, Cindy Savitsky, Jane Godfrey, and Cathy O’Brian, will fondly remember Syd’s endless stories and laughter. His family and friends will greatly miss the joy that Syd brought into their lives.

Syd was strongly connected to his English and Scottish roots, spending time researching his ancestry and visiting both countries multiple times. Following in his father’s footsteps, Syd was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion and a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan, always hopeful that this would be their year. Syd’s passion for history and all things automotive also led him to develop a particular fondness for British cars and vintage Ford trucks, which he loved to talk about with anyone interested.

Those who knew Syd will remember a man of great humour. His laughter was contagious, and his ability to find joy in the simplest of moments was a gift he gave freely. Syd was also the embodiment of love; his generous spirit extended not just through material offerings but more significantly through the time and care he invested in those around him. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable man he was.

Interment and a small celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Rest in peace, Syd.
